Drumming & Drum Making All of the decisions that we make are based on natural rhythms of society, of thought, of nature. To understand these rhythms is to know what to do when. By beginning with our own rhythms people can gain a clear picture of the rhythms that surround them. In this process they can also understand the rhythms involved with the people with whom they work. These workshops allow people to learn about their own rhythm, and how that rhythm fits into the larger groups with which they work. Drumming is an excellent way to encourage people to listen to one another, to respect the skills that another has, and a tool for relieving stress. Workshops - Frame Drum Making
- Make your own native frame drum and beater. Explore simple rhythms and experience a guided drum journey. Bring your heart and spirit together within a drum making journey. Participants will make their own frame drum and stick, also learn some basics of how to drum. The empowerment of this process brings together your inner strength and peace.
- Join in the Rhythm
- Participants get their own drum or instrument to play. They learn the basics of how to play the instruments, and we start with simple rhythms that all can follow. From there we create our own sound-scapes. Starting with a simple beat and building upon that. Soon all are involved in an intuitive process of listening and responding.
- Drum Circle
- Participate in a guided drum circle. Learn rhythms, and learn about the history of drumming, and about its place in many cultures around the world. Experience the magic of communication with others without using words, and deepen your sense of your own rhythm as it weaves into a group. Explore the rhythm of who you are with the rhythm of t he world in which you live. We use guided meditation, movement, and drums to create a ceremony blending them together. No experience necessary, bring a drum if you have one, or any other rhythm instrument. Drums will be provided. Wear loose clothing.
- Drumbeat, Heartbeat, Earth & Spirit
- The drum's call brings us back to being in the womb, to when all that we knew was the rhythm of our mothers heart, breath and movement. After birth it stays the same except our mother changes, she becomes and is the earth. Using drums, shakers, sticks, rattles, voice, and ceremony we will re-create the connections and the sounds to be at one with each other, our mother earth and her divine spirit.
- Drum Making & Rhythm Level I
- In this course you will make your own frame drum, including its beater, or an asheko drum, and learn to play them. Discussions will include the methods involved in making ashekos, djembes and other rhythm instruments. Discover how to tan the hides necessary for these drums. Understand different varieties of woods, hides, and techniques used in a variety of drum constructions. Explore the history, ceremony and cultures from which these drums come, learning rhythms and stories about the role of drums. You will also be challenged to explore your own rhythm while learning to play your drum. A performance will be created for presentation toward the end of the week.
- Drum Making & Rhythm Level II
- The level ll Drum Making & Rhythm is a continuation, and deepening of the skills learned in the level l course. It may be taken by graduates of the level l course, or by those with woodworking and/or drumming experience. Students learn specific rhythms, and may learn to facilitate a drumming circle.
